The two stoke engine chugged along, pouring exhaust across the still water our guide says "quite, there is a crocodile - on the log. He is a big one, not to many left like him". It is quite as the 5 of us including the guide watch the croc as we glide past. It's been 4 days since I arrived out here in Tortuguero and the croc is by far the biggest thing I have seen. I've been in Costa Rica for three weeks and it's not like Africa, no giant predators lurking in all the grasses, behind the tree. Here the killers are stealthy, I saw a Jaguarandi near Arinal and I heard a Jaguar roar on the tip of De Osa. But this croc, just sitting there is scary. I was IN THE WATER just an hour ago.
Not that anyone made me go in the water, someone had to get in to tie up the boat, and that's just the kind of guy I am. I just jumped in, then thought about piranha, caiman and everything else in a central American waterway.
Sure there are lot of animals, fish and plant life in this watery region of Coast Rica. I should mention that while the is an interesting photo this not even close to the best photo of A) my trip or B) and American crocodile. But while I work on my writing/publishing skills I want to catch the essence of each of my "portfolio" photographs. If you want to skip the monologue you can browse them at professional adventurer
