I am not a pilot. I really have no interest in piloting an aircraft. I would rather be doing other things while I am flying. I would rather be releasing weapons systems, navigating, photographing or the like. But I really love flying in small aircraft; fixed wing or rotor craft.
So when asked if I would like to fly across to the Alaska range from Anchorage right past Mt. Susitna I was in.
I was a sunny day in Anchorage, but looking across the inlet you could see the clouds here and there in the mountains. I have no fear of flying, I know many people who do not like flying, but I am not one of them. I also don't know much about small aircraft, I am around a lot of people, even non-pilots who know all about these small planes. I know for search and rescue we use two of the Alaska State Troopers helos; an Astar and a Robinson R44. Helicopters do not get much smaller then the R44, but it doesn't bother me.
Once airborne we flew across the flats into the mountains right past Mt Su. We flew for a few hours in out and below the clouds. Above the glaciers and passes. It was a great flying day.
