I got the COLOSSUS Versipack, one of the newer bags from Maxpedition after having owned a few of their other bags. I had the Jumbo but was not quite right. It would slide off your back if you bent over. The Jumbo was also just a bit to small for a proper ultra-lite operation. My Canon 30D, snacks, water, survival kit and Glock 20.
This bag is a bit bigger and has more pockets. The asymmetrical strap on the Fatboy also didn't work for me, where as the symmetry of the Colossus works better.
Why don't you carry a backpack? you ask. Well, I have a camera and I need something I can get my camera out of quickly. The same goes for my pistol in bear/bad guy country. The other waist/shoulder bags I have either don't fit my camera or are hard to access on the go. I have many backpacks and my smallest is the RT25 from Arcteryx which is supper if I am doing anything technical in ultra-lite mode, but fails for fast access due to it's near waterproofness.
In short review the bag has held what I need for the time I need without much discomfort and allowed me to access it quickly. I plan on using it during urban searches since I hate our issued vest. For the size and use I give it an arbitrary rating of an "A".
For the record I carry in my Colossus:
- Canon 30D with 17-85 IS lens
- Back country first aid kit
- Marmot powerstrech gloves & fleece cap
- Mountain Hardware Typhoon Jacket
- Flint, compass, space pen, ziploc bag, fixed blade CRKT knife and waterproof paper.
- Glock 20 or FN Five Seven depending on my need.
- 16 oz water bottle
